Popular Chinese Card Games- Dou Di Zhu

October 6th, 2011

Card games over the years have lengthened their reach towards various parts of the world. These days’ cards games are played by people from all around the world. As the reach of these games has gone global this has led to introduction of different forms of card games to the world. Every now and then over a poker blog we read about a card game coming from a particular country. Such has been the impact of these card games that almost all the countries have their local card game forms and China has been one such country. Benefitting from the reach of Macau some of the Chinese games have spread out of the country and are being played by people all over the world. One such form of card game is ‘Dou Di Zhu’.
In order to pay Dou di Zhu you require three players and a deck of cards, however in this game the deck should contain two jokers but you should be able to differentiate between the two jokers without any problem as the colored joker is ranked higher than the black and white joker. In Dou di Zhu suits don’t matter. You can even have a deck of cards without suits and still play this game.

Gameplay:

In this game the cards are shuffled and each player is dealt 17 cards and the remaining left over cards 3(Nos) are left face down at the table. These three cards are known as Big Boss. Once all this is done a player amongst them becomes the Big Boss and the others become the Workers, this is decided by auction where players look at their cards and if they have a good hand they’ll bid high the best bid is of 3 points and the way who gets to bid is decided by:

Showing a card to everyone and putting it back into the deck before shuffling the cards at the start of the game and whoever gets that card bids first.

The player who won the last game gets the opportunity to bid first.

Whoever is the first player to put three points in is the Boss in this game, and if all the players pass you go back to the shuffling stage and start up again.  Once you decide about whom the Boss is then the Boss picks the three cards which are kept face down at the table and keeps them face up so that everyone can see. These cards now become the part of the Boss’s hand.

After all this the main rounds start where the Boss goes in first and puts down a combo(combination) and the next two players follow him by playing a higher combination or say pass. The combinations in this game are:

1.    single card
2.    Double
3.    Triple
4.    Triple + a single
5.    Full House
6.    Run
7.    Double Run
8.    Triple Run
9.    Triple Run + Singles
10.    Full House Run
11.    Quadruple + 2 Singles or Quadruple + 2 Doubles
12.    Bomb(Four equally ranked cards. A bomb can be played on top of any other combo. It beats everything except for a Nuke.)
13.    Nuke (Both Jokers. A nuke can be played on top of any other combo. It can beat anything and it contains two Jokers)

Points:

In the end the player who wins gets the payout according to the auction that was held at the start of the game. If at the auction the high bid was 3 and if the Boss wins then the Boss receives 3 points from each player and if the workers win then the Boss will pay 3 points each to the workers. The best part is that if a person wins the hand with a Bomb or Nuke then the Payout gets doubled and if it doesn’t sound exciting then the payouts and even get compounded once they have been doubled.
How..?
As the high bid at the start was 3 and there were 3 bombs played during the round then the payout is 3*2*2*2 which makes it 24.
